FREE Adolescent Dentistry

FREE dental care is available from Year 9 (Form 3) until the 18th birthday, regardless of whether the adolescent is still at school or not. They are  entitled to free dental care irrespective of employment.

Not all dentists provide this service so it is important to attend a dentist who has a contract with your District Health Board to treat adolescent patients - click on your region of the map to find out who is contracted.

Your dentist will be able to tell you what treatment is available for free under the adolescent contract. Basic treatment includes:

• an annual check-up
• examination and radiographs if necessary
• fissure sealants where relevant
• other preventative treatment like fluoride application
• root canal fillings
• extraction (but not orthodontic extractions)
• oral health education and encouragement to continue good oral health.
